Skimboard waxing is different from skateboard waxing. Skateboard needs waxing for better and plane slide. But you have to make the board sticky to avoid sliding off your feet. Otherwise, you would slip from the board and could cause dangerous accident.
Choosing a skimboard wax
There are four types of surfboard wax available. They are: warm, cold, cool and tropical. Each type is made for different water temperature. The warm surfboard wax comes for the temperature 68-78 F, the cold is for about 58F or below, the cool wax if for 58-68 F and the tropical surfboard wax is for 75 F or below.
To choose the right wax for your skimboard, you should know about the temperature of the located water spot where you are going to skimboarding. It is very important to use the right one because different wax that has different rating might be dangerous for you.

How to wax a skimboard?
After choosing the right wax for your board according to the water temperature, you have to apply the wax before starting your riding. The materials that you would need are- a wax comb, topcoat wax and basecoat wax. If your skimboard has any wax leftover, you would need a cleaning agent or plastic scraper to clean the extra wax. There are some steps below to give you a guideline about how to apply wax properly.
Step 1: Cleaning the board surface
Wash all the dirt with clean water. if your skimboard has excess wax, take a plastic scraper and scrape the extra wax off. Do not use other scrapes because it could cause damage to the surface of your board. The easy way to remove the remaining wax is to melt it using a hairdryer and then wipe off.
Another way is to use the cleaning agent. The most popular cleaning agent is the chief firewater. It helps melting the excess wax easily. When the remaining wax is gone, you would find your board looks smooth and polished again.
Step 2: applying the first coat
To create a thump pattern, the base coat would help you and it would stay on. You should use the high temperature rating wax like the tropical wax for the first coat or base coat. It has no relation with the water temperature.
The first coat is a hard nature of wax that is a bit tough to smear and it stays longer. You have to rub it on the surface with much force in a round motion. if you apply it lightly, it would take more time and the wax would come off.
Step 3: Applying top coat
After finishing applying the first coat, it is the time to apply the top coat. Rub on the one coat of your wax with a straight motion, starting with the nose and ending with the tail of your board. Apply the second layer from rail to rail.
Step 4: Applying the heat rated wax
Now the base covering completed and you have to start coating with the wax that is temperature rated according to the water of the riding area. Put on the layer with a circular motion and several bumps are needed throughout your boat. After finishing this step, your board is ready to go!
Step 5: Reapply the wax
A little amount of the top coat could be flaked off after skimboarding. Because some wax would go to the water and some might stuck onto your shorts or suit. So, you should apply another layer of the wax before going to ride again in the water.
